The Gunpowder Plot was a conspiracy in 1605, orchestrated by a group of English Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plot aimed to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on November 5th, intending to kill King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne.
The conspirators had rented a cellar beneath the House of Lords and filled it with barrels of gunpowder. However, the plot was foiled when one of the conspirators sent an anonymous letter to a friend warning him to stay away from the Parliament.
